Teaching Human-Centered Design Process To New HRs

HRs these days, although are being more knowledgeable about it, don’t really get to see a lot of human-centered design examples. While there are several universities that offer masters and higher education level degrees for this, you can always learn from expert educators from online courses and podcasts.

Here at PAFOW, we have such educators providing all the knowledge and examples on HCD.

What Is Human-Centered Design?

So, what is human-centered design? Well, it is a principle that was made in order to solve any kind of problem involving working collaboratively with people. There are actually 4 principles and they all involve understanding core problems, being people-centered, activity-centered, and testing and prototyping.

Two Major Human-Centered Design Examples

Here are a few examples to give you an idea of what HCD is all about.

  • Pull/Push Doors

The push or pull doors case has a problem with it and HCD provides a solution to it.

What’s The Problem In This?

The design of the push/pull door interrupts the cognitive bias of the human brain and seeing a handle makes us want to pull it. But when do we push?

What May Be A Solution?

Well, the solution is that the push side of the door doesn’t need a handle, so we can put the handle on the pull side only. If the push side has a plain pad, everyone would push it anyway.

  • Kids’ Toothbrushes

Kids’ toothbrushes are kind of different from adult brushes, right? Well, the reason is a solution to a problem.

What’s The Problem In This?

Adult brushes are thinner and longer, while the kids’ toothbrushes are thicker and smaller in size. And toddlers tend to grab their toothbrushes with their fists.

What May Be A Solution?

The solution for that? Make the handle squishy, fat, and short, so they’ll be more eager to brush their teeth. Making the toothbrush easy to grip for a child can heavily increase the number of kids who regularly brush their teeth.

We Teach This More In-Depth In Learning Labs
