Learning Human-Centered Design Principles

Human-centered design principles were made to solve problems that involve working with people collaboratively. To solve problems from their cores and focusing on the people and their priorities, 4 major principles had been come up with.

Understanding And Addressing Core Problems

The first principle is to identify a problem’s root. A lot of times companies, or more prominently, HRs will solve only the symptoms or results of an underlying issue. This principle suggests that we focus on finding out what caused the issue in the first place and solving it at its core. 

 

Asking why to every little issue, and coming to a solid conclusion is most certainly the first step. When it comes to people not understanding something and possibly messing up a project, you can’t just fix the project itself, you also have to teach the individual responsible for the mess up. That’s the whole point of this.  

 

Being People-Centered

It is typically seen nowadays that companies focus so much on implementing new technology into their processes, that they forget about the people that are running the company themselves. Your approach should be people-centered, not solely technology-centered. 

 

Focusing on individuals, helping them deal with confusions and issues, teaching them new methods and concepts, all fall under the category of being people-centered. 

 

Activity-Centered System Approach 

Activities cannot exist in a state of isolation. A design cannot focus on individual components, instead of all of them as a whole. When it comes to activities, focusing on the overall development can be more beneficial than improving individual sectors. 

 

Lots of Prototyping and Testing 

There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for businesses. Yes, there are similarities, but you have to figure out if one strategy is actually good for the development of your particular business or organization or not. 

 

There will be a lot of testing and experimenting with plans, strategies, and methods. You should be prepared to deal with people having to act out different scenarios given the strategy you choose. These trials will help figure out which method is best for your organization.
